Does Lockdown & WFH favor working women?

The COVID-19 crisis has had a more detrimental effect on women as compared to men. The effects are generic, and in terms of the workplace and career as well.

Women are more likely than men to have been furloughed or laid off. Work from home is the new normal in the COVID-19 aftermath. In such a phase, 1 in 4 women has considered entirely quitting the workplace to work from home. The arrangement promises consistency, at the cost of career growth, while the latter still stays achievable.

 Working remotely poses a range of challenges for men and women. In some cases, they are similar for both genders. In others, they are different for men and women.

Men and women, both, had been encountered with stress and fatigue. But there were differences in the way they countered the challenges and the future that they foresee for themselves.

Men and women, both gave considerations to return to 9 to 5 office jobs after the lockdown situation ended. Women, however, were compelled to take housework and childcare into deeper consideration.

Kids were at home during the lockdown, and parents had the responsibility to see that they were able to adjust well to the online classes. As per a recently conducted survey, 35% of men believed that childcare would have no implication over them returning to the office, unlike 14% of women who had the same opinion.

Similarly, 46% of women believed that childcare was a significant factor for them to decide whether or not they return to the office, unlike 11% of men.

60% of women claimed that they felt more productive working from home. They believed that the greatest difficulty that they encountered while working from home was that there was no separation in work and home life.

Fatigue was an important hurdle faced by women who used to work from home during the lockdown. This came in the format of the inability to switch off and cabin fever.

The pandemic changed the outlook of working mothers regarding working from home. 69% of the working mothers now look forward to a hybrid schedule, wherein they can work from home for two or three days a week.
